How It Started

James Ryan began his automotive career in 1945, getting his start with the Chrysler Motor Division. However, he knew he had more to offer outside the company and set out to bring his vision to life. He wanted to help customers achieve their automotive dreams and accomplished as much when he joined the legendary Leonard Rydell of Rydell Chevrolet in North Dakota. Mr. Ryan spent the next decade learning every aspect of the dealership, flourishing as a General Sales Manager and General Manager before purchasing a dealership of his own in 1973.

Jim Ryan Chevrolet officially opened its doors in 1973, marking the beginning of the Ryan Family legacy that we’re part of today. With his name on the marquee, Mr. Ryan built his dealership around his customers and quickly earned nationwide recognition for his unique approach. He was named a regional finalist for the National Dealer of the Year Award by Time Magazine in 1986, a prestigious honor that showcased Mr. Ryan’s genuine commitment to his customers and efforts to build his business on the principles of integrity, honesty, and respect. More importantly, it reflected Mr. Ryan’s incredible feat of promising and delivering unparalleled customer service.

How It’s Going

After 27 years of serving customers with the best sales and Honda service center around, Mr. Ryan retired and left the company in the hands of his daughter, Kathleen. As a child, Kathleen intently watched her father, and just as he had done with Leonard Rydell, learned every aspect of the dealership and its operations. When she took the helm, Kathleen immediately set out to expand her father’s legacy, forming Ryan Family Dealerships and adding venues like Ryan Honda.

Today, Kathleen makes sure every Ryan Family dealer remains committed to Mr. Ryan’s core principles of honesty, transparency, integrity, and respect. Kathleen’s exceptional leadership and her promise to make every customer a priority earned her national recognition in 2010, when she was named a national finalist for Time Magazine’s National Dealer of the Year Award. With that in mind, it’s safe to say Kathleen is continuing her father’s legacy in every way.
